Rising Stars Showcase
As part of the Asian Harp Festival program, we are inviting young harp students from Asia region to showcase their performance in public on November 22 and 23, 2008 in Hong KongEach participating country in the Festial will be representated by up to two rising stars:                                                  - One Rising Star (Senior Division) born before Nov 20, 1985 (Age 22 or below)                           - One Rising Star (Junior Division) born before Nov 20, 1991 (Age 16 or below)

2008 Rising Stars candidates are chosen by invitation

  • Recent Winners of National or International Harp Competition - Asian Nationalities
  • Confirmed participations: Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong
  • For the 2008 invitees: pls fill out this form

2009 candidates will be selected by Taped-Audition submitted thru an OPEN application

  • Audition Application Deadline:  July 31, 2009 (A preliminary application is downloadable now)
  • Audition details will be finalized and announced by Jan 31, 2009
  • Successful candidates will receive individual notification by no later than Sept 30, 2009

Yun Chai Lee - Singapore

Woojin Lee, 10 years old, Korea

·         In her 5th year at the Sangtan Elementary School, she started studying the harp with Ms. Rana Park, now she studies with Ms. Hye Soon Yoon

·         Awards received include Gran Prix - Haneum Music Competition for all instruments 2008; 2nd Prize – Korean     National Music Association Competition 2008; Outstanding player prize at Musical Contest 2008 held by Kyunggi-do local government

·         Enjoy her worship performances at Kwanglim Methodist Church, Janfchun Hall of Kwanglim Methodist Church and ‘Harp Story’ performance at the Seoul Arts Center

·         Recently, Woojin performed as a concerto soloist with Moldova National Radio & TV Orchestra 

 

 

 

Jackie Chia-Chi Chiang,  13 years old, Taiwan

·         Studied the harp and piano from the age of 4. Her first harp teacher was Yi Yin in New Zealand. As Jackie returned to Taiwan, she has been studying with Menglu Chiu since 2004

·         She has recently won the first prize in the Young Artist’s Harp Competition 2008 in Georgia, USA

·         Other prizes won included First Prize- National Culture Cup Harp Competition 2008; 2nd Prize – National Harp Competition 2005 & 2007; Prize winner in the International Nippon Harp Competition 2006, Junior Division, in Japan

·         Jackie has taken master classes with Sebastien Lipman and Han-an Liu

 

Yun Chai Lee,  11 years old, Singapore

·         Started playing the harp at the age of 5 in 2002. First public performance a year later at the Mandeville Annual Concert.  Recently got into and began his preparation for the 2nd round competition at the Lily Laskine Harp Competition.  Yun Chai is one of the youngest participants in the competition this year

·         Chosen by President S.R Nathan and performed before Queen Elizabeth II at the Istana in Singapore 2006.  Frequently perform in public, such as at the National University of Singapore Hall for the ‘Child Aid Straits Pocket Money Fund’ 2005 and at the National Volunteer & Philanthropist Centre Awards Ceremony 2006

·         Yun Chai has taken master classes with Isabelle Perrin

Kimberly Kam Dick Wong - Hong Kong

Rieko Sato - Japan

Kimberly Kam Dick Wong,  16 years old, Hong Kong

·         Started playing the harp at the age of 7, taught by Amy Tam.  Currently enrolled to a music program at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the harp study with Barbara Sze

·         Awarded the fifth place at the 2008 Young Artist’s Harp Competition (Emerging Artist’s Division), USA, which was Kimerly’s first international harp competition experience

·         Kimberly has taken master class with Douglas Rioth and Dan Yu

 

Laura Peh,  16 years old, Singapore

·         Began playing the harp at the age of 9.  Currently a member of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO), the  Rave Harpers and the Methodist Girls’ School String Ensemble (MGS)

·         Frequent orchestra and solo performances, such as touring with MGS in Japan 2007 ‘Friends’ , with SNYO in Italy 2008 ‘10th Florence International Music Festival’, Concerto debut with the Orchestra Valerio Boldi (Italy) 2008 ‘Concerto Conclusivo della Masterclass’

·         Awards received include Gold Award – SYF Central Judging for String Ensembles 2006, Singapore; Jeune Espoir prize – 1st Elias Parish Alvars Harp Trophy for Young Talents 2008, UK; Bronze Award – National Youth Achievement Award 2008, Singapore

·         Laura has taken master classes with Catrin Finch and Isabelle Perrin

 

Rieko Sato,  18 years old, Japan

·         Began learning the harp from the age of 9, studied with Ritsuko Hijima and later with Yoshiko Kikuchi

·         She entered Musashino Academia Musicae Senior High School in 2005 and later became one of the school’s soloists.  She is now admitted to Musashino Academia Musicae and studying the harp with Professor Kumiko Inoue

·         Awards received include 3rd Prize – Nippon Harp Competition (Junior Division) 2002 in Soka, Japan; a recipient of Yamaha Music Foundation

·         Rieko was chosen to perform in Focus-on-youth program at the 10th World Harp Congress in Amsterdam 2008

Yesl Kim - Korea

Wei Ching Tseng - Taiwan

Kilby Li - Hong Kong

Yesl Kim,  20 years old, Korea

·         After less than a year of harp study, Yesl was chosen to take part at the Kumho’s Prodigy Audition and subsequently gave a solo debut recital at Kumho Art Hall in 2003.  She also played with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Prime Philharmonic Orchestra as a concerto soloist in the same year

·         Entering her 6th year in harp study, Yesl has won first prizes in all the major harp competitions in Korea, such as Korean National String Competition, Kookmin-Hansae University Competition

·         She graduated from Sunhwa Arts High School, one of Korea’s leading music, art and dance institute, and broke the school record in harp-study achievement.  Yesl is now on her second year of harp study at Ewha Womans University, studying with Jung Kwak

·         Yesl is very active in chamber music playing and is the youngest member of ‘Harpyday Ensemble’

·         She was invited to perform at the Focus-on-Youth program at the 10th World Harp Congress in Amsterdam in 2008 

 

Wei Ching Tseng,  19 years old, Taiwan

·         Started learning the harp from the age of 9, Wei Ching received her music education from Shinmin School and XiaoMing High School of Music.  Harp was her major study and piano was her minor study during high school

·         She received many national harp competition awards, including the 1st Prize – National Harp Competition (Classical Division B) 2002, ‘Most Promising Young Harpist’ – National Harp Competition (Classical Division A) 2004; 4th Runner-up Prize (Harp Solo) - National Music Competition across all schools 2008

·         Wei Ching performed frequently with the Youth Division of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, including a US & Canada tour in 2002

·         She taken master classes with Xavier De Maistre, Sebastien Lipman , Han-an Liu and Naoko Yoshino

 

Kilby Li,  19 years old, Hong Kong

·         Has been studying the harp with Ann Huang since the age of 9 at the Music Office of Hong Kong.  Kilby graduated from Heep Yunn School in 2006, where she played frequently with the Heep Yunn School Orchestra

·         Kilby has also performed with the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Metropolitan Orchestra and the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band prior to her admission to the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2008

·         Kilby has taken master classes with Jung Kwak, Shannon Chieh and Dan Yu

 

Our Goals

Youth arts is an important cultural assets in our society, we aim:                                               1. To inspire youth from all walks of life in making their dreams a reality                                     2. To stimulate public interest in the knowledge, appreciation and practice of the arts                  3. To provide a platform for gifted young harpists to develop their achievement potential
